It’s hard to plan for car storage solutions when most people don’t think about it until they need it! And when they do think about it, they’re not even sure where to start.
There are several reasons why someone might look to store their vehicle. Whatever the reason is for you, here at The Hideout: Elite Motor Storage, we provide highly secured storage space for all of your valuables, including cars.
If you are in the southeast Naples or Marco Island area, keep reading to find out what you need to know about storing your car at The Hideout!
Should You Store Your Car?
The first question you need to answer is should you store your car? For some, that might be an easy question to answer. For instance, if you don’t drive your car regularly, you may consider a storage unit over keeping it in your driveway. This way, it’s not taking up too much space, and it’s protected from the elements. At The Hideout, our larger storage units are all individually air-conditioned, which means your vehicle will stay in great shape!
Those who travel for leisure or work are another group who may want to explore vehicle storage options. This especially applies to those who are away for months at a time—think members of the military, college students, truck drivers, flight attendants, and traveling nurses, among others.
To care for their antique car, sports car, or luxury car, car enthusiasts may want to prioritize storing their vehicles in a storage unit. In addition to air-conditioned spaces, the Hideout has many safety features. Our facility is fenced and lighted, there are video cameras on site, and we have one of the best managers around. You can rest assured that your belongings will be safe and secure!
One of the perks of owning—instead of renting—your storage unit is that whether you fit into any of the above groups or not, you can still keep your car in a storage unit! You have complete control and 24-hour access to your unit because it’s yours. Check out some other benefits of buying a storage unit here!
Storage Size Guide
It’s important that you know the size of your car before you settle on a storage unit. If you can’t drive the vehicle to the facility to test driving in and backing out of the unit, make sure you measure the length and width of your car so you know what storage size you need for your car.
At The Hideout, we have several different unit sizes. Our “mini-storage” units are ideal for small cars, sprinters, Class C RVs, and boats and measure 15′ x 30′. We also offer four large condo-storage buildings that only slightly vary in size. Each unit is 25′ x 55′, 20′ x 50’, or 25′ x 50′. These units have space for vehicles up to the size of an RV with room to spare!
Just make sure that you don’t rent or buy a unit that is too small because you won’t have enough room to navigate, and a larger unit will help you avoid the problem of not having enough space but it will run at a higher rate.
Extra Car Storage Tips
Before putting your car into storage, there are some basic maintenance tasks you should do to prepare for storage.
Clean the interior and exterior of your car to protect it. Dust and dirt settling can wear down the paint and metal, damaging your car when it’s safe from everything else. Wash your car before storing it, and invest in a vehicle cover to keep it clean no matter how long you plan to store it. Then check inside your car—the glove compartment, the trunk, and under the seats—to collect any personal items that may get damaged if left in storage for too long.
Keep track of your car registration and the title. Check things like tire pressure and filters. Change the oil to help avoid any risk of contaminants destroying your engine. And don’t use the parking brake when you store your vehicle because you will risk damaging your brake pads and rotors. These may seem like minor maintenance tasks, but you can prevent safety issues and expensive repairs if you store your car the right way from the beginning.
When looking for the perfect storage unit for your car, there are a few additional features you may want to look for. Safety and security should be at the top of the list. Look for facilities that are fenced and even offer electronic gate access, have lights and video cameras on the premises, and allow for 24-hour access.
Especially for vehicle storage, you’ll want to consider a facility with drive-up access. You’ll save yourself the headache of having to use additional equipment or extra effort to navigate your car into the unit. With drive-up access, you can simply drive your car into the unit like you would any other driveway or parking spot.
